A high quality and hard wearing binding which conforms exactly to University requirements for all PhD, MBA, MA, & MSc submissions. It is also accepted as a high quality alternative for most other course submissions including BA and BSc. This is a hand made, thread sewn, permanent binding with covers hand made from 2.5mm thick board covered in a library buckram for durability with gold or silver lettering added on the cover and/or spine. All materials and lettering used, follow the same standards and patterns which have been a requirement of Universities for the last 20 years.
Standard Colours available are Black, Dark Green, Navy Blue, Teal, Mid Blue & Maroon (other colours are available on request).
Bring printed copies of your dissertation and the completed Dissertation Binding Form to Davidson Library, . Dissertations are shipped to the UC Bindery once every four weeks and are normally returned to us a month thereafter; the specific schedule is linked below. Bound copies of the dissertation will be sent to the student’s department via UCSB Campus Mail when they are returned.

You have several options with our thesis/dissertation binding service: We will follow the specifications (if provided) of your college/university for copies you submit to the institution, or you can select your own layout for personal copies. The most popular cover material is , which is not only economical and durable, but attractive as well.
Allowable Costs: Expenses usually allowed under PHS research grants will be covered by the NIDA dissertation research grant, but may not exceed $50,000 per year in direct costs. An application that requests more than $50,000 per year in direct costs will not be reviewed. Allowable costs include the applicant salary (not to exceed NIH's current salary for predoctoral fellows for 12 months full-time effort). In developing the non-modular budget, applicants may also include costs for research assistants' salaries, and direct research project expenses, such as data processing, payments to subjects, supplies, consultants, and dissertation costs (e.g., printing and binding of the dissertation). No tuition, alteration/renovations, contracting costs, faculty salary, or space rental are allowed on dissertation research grants. Indirect costs are limited to eight percent of requested direct costs, less equipment.

Please note: for all forms of hard back binding, add together the cost per bind and the cover and spine printing charge to give your final cost.
To order personal copies, you will need to print and complete a (). Completion of this form includes obtaining signed approval and a budget/recharge number from your department. Because binding costs are charged to the approving department, students will need to reimburse their department for the cost of binding. Personal copies currently cost $31 per bound volume.
You will also need to produce the printed copies of your dissertation. Use of 100% cotton bond paper is a preferred choice but not a requirement. You are responsible for ensuring that all pages are collated correctly. When ordering multiple copies it is helpful to ensure the separation between copies is clear. Manila envelopes or short paper boxes work well for this.
