In this dissertation I narrativize the history of the modern Japanese novel (shosetsu) from 1887 to 1933, from the initial conceptual reception of the modem western novel in the mid-Meiji period to its formal completion/exhaustion, a sublation of the genre into a different species, i.e., the rnonogatari (storytelling, or, literally, telling things). In doing this, I risk reducing the empirical and historical multiplicity of both the notion and numerous particular products of the shosetsu: the writers, critics, and texts I have selected for analysis are not so many as to be general and comprehensive; nor do I give sufficient reference to the secondary literature on them. I take such a risk because I place more emphasis on the narrative effect of my thesis that is no longer carried out effectively on the terrain of implied audiences (scholars and literary intellectuals). Those I have wishfully in mind are ones who are still interested in the old notion of crit- ical intervention regardless of their specific ideological locations.

This dissertation explores the moment in Japan when women emerged as con- sumers of popular periodicals. In recent years, researchers in Japanese studies have begun to cull materials from women's magazines to pursue various topics in literary and historical inquiry. Yet although women's periodicals have been one of the most important forums for modem Japanese fiction writers and public intellectuals, the magazines themselves have never been examined satisfactorily. By turning attention directly to the texture of the journals themselves, this disser- tation sheds new light on the central place of women's magazines, and of print culture in general, in the literary and intellectual production of modem Japan. It argues that these publications helped to construct conceptions of gender in modem Japan, particularly the meanings of women as readers, consumers, and writers of literature and journalism. More broadly, I argue that the material functioning of a publication is relevant to understanding its effects on audiences.
